A single variety off-dry cider made with an intriguing apple
Behind the Jacobean mansion of Treowen in Monmouthshire is a small mixed orchard, planted in the 1960s. The majority of the trees are apples and of these a half are dessert and the rest are cider apples; four Foxwhelp and six Colloggett Pippin.
The Colloggett Pippin is unusual being a large, waxy apple, with very large leaves. For several years we didn’t know the variety but eventually sent a sample for DNA testing. Also known as Cornish Giant, Colloggett Pippin originates from Cornwall.
